The football landscape could be up for a massive change as UEFA and CONCACAF are discussing the possibility of merging their respective Nations League tournaments, giving a chance to some of the best in Europe to compete against some of the best from North and Central America.

As per Goal.com, the tournament could launch as early as autumn 2028 in a revamped tiered format. This comes as there is tension within the global game due to the FIFA Forward Enterprise episode, which eyed private involvement and investment in FIFA tournaments, particularly the FIFA World Cup, but was withdrawn following heavy backlash from member associations.

While FIFA failed to go forward with their move, the alignment and relations between UEFA and CONCACAF have strengthened, with both confederations no longer in support of FIFA president Gianni Infantino as he battles to retain his position. However, this new development is not the direct result of the crisis between FIFA and its member associations, as per an ESPN report quoted by Goal.com.

For CONCACAF heavyweights like the USA and Mexico, it could be a chance to get more quality competition consistently. Earlier, CONCACAF nations would get friendlies against top European teams during international windows. But with the UEFA Nations League occupying the window, the North American giants have nowhere to go for top-tier competition.

US will have four games across September and October against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada. While US Soccer realises that these matches have value, the competition in a unified Nations League will give them exposure to more top-level teams more often.

The format for the tournament is a work in progress, while there is a high ambition to pull this off. There are discussions on maintaining a tiered league structure currently used in both tournaments, but the travel logistics, promotion and relegation mechanics between both confederations continue to pose hurdles.

The target timeline is pushed to 2028 due to tight scheduling in the international calendar. With the CONCACAF Nations League kicking off next month and the UEFA Nations League as well, the autumn of 2028 looks more feasible.

Beyond the competition, the economic benefits are promising as UEFA could expand its footprint beyond the North American market, where the FIFA World Cup 2026, co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, skyrocketed interest in football. (ANI)
