Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday praised the Maheshwari community for its contribution to education, healthcare and social welfare, saying that citizens and social organisations have an important role in nation-building.

Birla was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Maheshwari Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre in Jaipur. He congratulated the Maheshwari Samaj for initiating a new chapter of human service through the healthcare project.

"The Maheshwari Samaj has started a new chapter of human service from Jaipur. The legacy of the community has always been based on service, dedication and social commitment," Birla said.

He said the Maheshwari community is recognised as an educated and cultured society that has continuously worked for the welfare of people.

Highlighting the community's role in the field of education, Birla said that even before India's independence, in 1926, the Maheshwari Samaj laid the foundation of educational institutions and contributed significantly to the spread of education across the country.

"Wherever the community saw a lack of education, it established schools, and wherever there was no arrangement for people to stay, it built dharamshalas," he said.

Birla said the Maheshwari community has always worked with a spirit of cooperation and support, especially during challenging times. He added that despite financial limitations and difficulties, the community continued its service initiatives.

"Everything cannot be left to the government alone. Citizens and societies also have an important role in the development of the nation," the Lok Sabha Speaker said.

Speaking about the newly launched medical institute, Birla said the centre should work towards providing affordable and accessible healthcare facilities to people across the country, particularly those living in remote areas.

He expressed hope that the institute would emerge as a centre of excellence, offering advanced treatment facilities while also contributing to research and innovation in the medical sector.

Birla further said that the use of wealth for the welfare of society gives true meaning to success and brings respect to an individual.

The event was attended by members of the Maheshwari community, social representatives and other dignitaries. The foundation stone ceremony marked a significant step towards expanding healthcare infrastructure in Jaipur. (ANI)
