Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday slammed Home Minister Amit Shah over the situation in Manipur and said peace should be restored in the northeastern state.

Rahul Gandhi, who addressed a press conference here, accused the BJP of "spreading hate" saying "it leads to fire which only Congress can douse".

Answering a query on Manipur, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not visited the violence-hit state.

"Everyone knows what is happening in Manipur. The Prime Minister has not gone there yet. I have gone to Manipur. We have asked the government to stop the violence. Someone has a vested interest. The Home Minister should do his work, but for some reason, he is not doing his work. Peace should be restored there. BJP people spread hatred, that is why 'aag lagti hai'. 'Aag ko sirf Congress mita sakti hain' because we talk about love, brotherhood," Gandhi said.

The situation in Manipur remains tense with curfews imposed in Imphal West and Imphal East following incidents of violence.

Internet services have been suspended in seven districts to maintain order.

Manipur has seen ethnic violence since May last year.

Rahul Gandhi also held a press conference in Mumbai and attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his "ek hain to safe hain" slogan.

Campaigning ended today for the Jharkhand and Maharashtra assembly polls.

Polling in Maharashtra and second phase of polling in Jharkhand will be held on November 20. Votes will be counted on November 23. (ANI)
