After Rahul Gandhi mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Ek hai toh safe hai' slogan by showing metal safe, the BJP hit back at the Congress MP on Monday, calling him "chota popat" whose family has looted the "tijori" (safe) of India for years.

BJP National Spokesperson Sambit Patra also claimed that "chota popat" was coined by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray to mock him.

Earlier, during a press conference in Mumbai on Monday, Gandhi brought the metal 'safe' claiming a link between the slogan and the Dharavi redevelopment project in the city being given to the Adani Group. He then pulled out two posters from the safe, one shows PM Modi with Gautam Adani with "ek hain to safe hain" written on it and another shows the map of Dharavi with "Dharavi ka bhavisha safe nahi" written on it. Gandhi sought to suggest that the Dharavi redevelopment project was designed to "save" Adani's interests.

Addressing a press conference at BJP headquarters here, Patra hit back and said, "The press conference done by the Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi was of a very low level. It does not suit the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi to bring a 'tijori' (safe) and do drama around it...'Chota popat ne kiya hai Congress chopat'...Balasaheb Thackeray has named Rahul Gandhi as 'Popat' in one of his interviews...The people who have been looting the 'tijori' for many years, now consider the meaning of 'tijori' as safe...The family has over the years looted the 'tijori' of India. They (the Gandhi family) looted India by doing many scams...Mother (accused no.1) and son (accused no. 2) are out on bail..."

Patra said the word safe in the slogan meant "security and keeping people safe" from infiltrators but Gandhi took it as 'tijori' (a safe).

"Those who have been breaking 'tijoris' for generations, it's obvious they will understand the meaning of the word safe as 'tijori'," Patra slammed Gandhi.

Campaigning has intensified for the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra with both the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) making efforts to woo the electorate. The polls are scheduled for November 20 and counting will be held on November 23. (ANI)
