"India positioned to produce green fuel derivatives at most competitive prices": MNRE Mission Director Abhay Bakre

Speaking to ANI on India's Green Hydrogen Mission, Bakre highlighted India's growing role as a future export hub for sustainable fuels and announced details regarding the upcoming mega energy event, the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo.

Underlining India's expanding renewable energy capacity and its potential to cater to global fuel import demands, Abhay Bakre said,"India has a strong advantage in renewable energy, and we are in a position to produce different hydrogen derivatives at the most competitive prices in the world... Potential energy-importing countries want to shift towards cleaner fuels, and India is well-positioned to provide these green fuels. These fuels are produced through green hydrogen, such as green ammonia, green methanol, and other derivatives."

Detailing the Ministry of New and Renewable Energys upcoming flagship event scheduled for November, Bakre outlined the scope and expected international participation.

"In the first week of November, the Government of Indias Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is organising the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo. This will be a combination of three major events, the Global ISA Assembly, the Renewable Energy Expo, and the International Conference on Green Hydrogen. It will be one of the biggest events of the year globally in the renewable energy sector," said Bakre.

Bakre also outlined the scale, structure, and strategic goals of the upcoming flagship Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 (held in New Delhi from November 2 to 5, 2026).

The summit relies on a collaborative approach, bringing in official partner nations alongside various Indian state governments to showcase regional investment opportunities, manufacturing hubs, and policy incentives.

"We expect participation from more than 10 partner countries joining hands with the Government of India. Several states have also confirmed their participation as official partners. More than 7,000 delegates are expected to attend, with around 90 policy and technical sessions, including plenary sessions where participants will discuss emerging technologies, upcoming policies, and investment opportunities through industry roundtables," said Bakre.

Meanwhile, Stefan Kaufmann, a former German parliamentarian and former Green Hydrogen Commissioner of the German government, said India has increasingly emerged as an important potential producer of green hydrogen and derivatives for overseas markets.

"We see India as one of the most important and interesting producers of green derivatives and hydrogen," Kaufmann told ANI at the same conference.

He also pointed to opportunities for Indian and German companies to work together in electrolyser manufacturing, combining German technology with India's potential to manufacture at competitive costs.

"In Germany, we have some of the best technologies in that field of electrolysers, but the costs are much too high," Kaufmann said, adding that cooperation between German and Indian companies could help build manufacturing capacity.

India launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission in January 2023 with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, targeting at least 5 million metric tonnes of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. According to the ministry, the mission is expected to mobilise more than Rs 8 lakh crore in investment and add around 125 GW of renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade.

The government has so far awarded 3,000 MW per annum of electrolyser manufacturing capacity and 8.62 lakh tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production capacity. Separately, the first green hydrogen hub under the mission at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam entails an investment of about Rs 1.85 lakh crore and is being developed with a significant focus on the export market.
