Supriya Das Datta, the elected head of Sepahijala Zilla Parishad (District Council) received a formal invite to attend a United Nations Population Fund-organized event in the USA on the role of women in local governance in India. She would be a part of the three-member Indian delegation that comprises two women elected representatives from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Zilla Parishad or district council are the elected bodies that act as the supervising authorities of all smaller elected bodies in the three-tier Panchayat system of a district.

According to the invitation letter, the permanent mission of India and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR) are jointly organizing the side event in collaboration with the United National Population Fund (UNFPA) on May 3 at the UN secretariat building based in the USA. The side event is being organized as a part of the Commission for Population and Development (CPD).

The theme of the event has been finalized to be, "Localizing the SDGs: Women in Local Governance in India, Lead the Way".

The invitation letter was signed by Andrea M Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative and Country Director Bhutan.

After receiving the invitation, she left for New Delhi on Sunday for the necessary preparations before leaving for the United States. Speaking to media persons before leaving for New Delhi, she attributed the invitation from such a coveted institution as an outcome of the work she was able to do after being elected to the post.

"Ever since I have assumed the charge of office, I have been working tirelessly to ensure proper education to the school-going girls. We have taken multiple initiatives to improve the participation of women in the rural economy through schemes like the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission and so on. I am extremely grateful that I have been offered the opportunity to be a part of the Indian delegation at the UNFPA conference. Two more women representatives from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will also travel with me as a part of the delegation that will represent India on the global platform," Das said.

She said she will leave for New Delhi on Sunday as some prior preparations are required before leaving for the United States. (ANI)
