Calling the Lok Sabha election a contest to save democracy and the Constitution, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday said that the party has put forward its 'paanch nyay' and 25 guarantees to get rid of the Modi govt's 10 years of "anyay kaal."

"This is an important election. The Congress party understands that this is an election to save democracy, to save the Constitution. The last ten years have been 'anyay kaal' (a period of injustice)," Ramesh said during a press conference held here.

"PM Modi is showing dreams of Amritkal. But for the last ten years, It has been 'anyay kaal' for the youth, women, workers and backward classes. Prime Minister does not talk about them. So the first issue in the election is to get rid of this 10 years of anyay kaal. To do so we have put forward 'paanch nyay' and 25 guarantees, " he said.

The 45-page manifesto of the Congress, released by part president Mallikarjun Kharge, has been named 'Nyay Patra' (Document for Justice). The poll promises in the manifesto included the right to apprenticeship (to every diploma holder or graduate below 25 years); making MSP a legal right; filling 30 lakh vacancies in government posts; constitutional amendments to remove the 50% cap on reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs; and nationwide caste census.

Ramesh said that Congress workers are distributing the guarantee card containing 'paanch nyay' and 25 guarantees to 8 crore families across the country.

"These guarantee cards are being delivered to about 21 lakh families in Assam. The guarantee card has signatures of Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. It is a guarantee of the Congress party for the women, youth, farmers, labourers and deprived classes," he said.

Saying that the coming election is also about saving the democracy and diversity of the country, he targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Manipur ethnic violence.

"Prime Minister said that what had happened in the country in the last ten years is just a trailer. I want to tell you that what had happened in Manipur 11 months ago was just a trailer. The same will happen in entire North East and then the entire country. Because society is being divided in the name of language, caste, province etc. The PM has not visited Manipur in 11 months. His slogans are one nation one religion, culture, leader," he said. (ANI)
