Following a brawl that broke out between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors at Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), BJP Councillor Sajal Ghosh, who was allegedly attacked on Saturday, said that such attacks have become a "monthly affair".

"There is a word in Bengali called maskabari, meaning monthly. Now there are monthly attacks on us in the Corporation and today it happened in the House. What is this?" the BJP Councillor said, speaking to ANI.

Speaking on the reason why the brawl broke out, Sajal Ghosh said, "There was no issue at all...I was talking light-heartedly with the Mayor. Suddenly they came and attacked me. I dont know whether their mental condition is right or not."

"I was exposing one of their scams. Many of them were disturbed, many got transferredWe were raising this issue once again in the Corporation. The matter was listed. They did not want us to speak. So they attacked us so that we walkout," he added.

Ghosh said that if the situation is so alarming with the public representatives, one can imagine the situation of the public and the city at large.

If the situation is like this with people's representatives then what is the situation of the public, of the city? There is no reason or motive for this attack. Have I said anything or abused anyone?" Ghosh said.

Speaking on getting a showcause notice for today's incident, Ghosh said, "Moreover, the rule is so absurd. They have also given me show cause notice now. Just like the police arrest the complainant who goes to file a complaint at the police station, they have done the same to me."

Earlier in the day, a brawl erupted between TMC and BJP councillors at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) during a session, prompting KMC Chairperson Mala Roy to adjourn the session.

Responding to the incident, BJP state president Suvendu Adhikari said it is not surprising since this "pattern" is followed by the elected TMC representatives.

"Bharatiya Janata Party Councillors; Shri Sajal Ghosh and Shri Vijay Ojha were attacked by TMC Councillors during a session at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. This is not at all surprising as this is the pattern followed by the elected TMC representatives within the Legislative Assembly, BDO Office, Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samitis or the Municipal Corporation," Adhikari said in a post on 'X'.

"They react in this manner when they are cornered with questions on corruption. Their hooliganism emanates from the arrogance of having more numbers on the floors of the Constitutional Institutions. They trample upon the Opposition's Democratic Right to question the wrongdoings of the ruling party," Adhikari added. (ANI)
