Raipur (Chhattisgarh) | April 1, 2026 11:22:02 PM IST
Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, on Wednesday underscored the Centre's commitment to empowering tribal youth through sports during her visit to the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) 2026.

The first edition of the multi-discipline Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) 2026 is being held across Raipur, Jagdalpur and Sarguja from March 25 to April 3, bringing together tribal athletes from across the country and providing them with a national platform to showcase their talent.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of Day 8 of the Games, Khadse said the initiative has been specifically designed to engage young people from tribal communities and promote wider participation in sports.

"The Khelo India Tribal Games are being organised in Raipur with the objective of actively involving youth in sports. We are focusing on encouraging greater participation, especially among tribal youngsters," she said.

The minister highlighted that the event is not only a platform for competition but also a crucial step in identifying emerging talent from remote regions. She added that athletes who demonstrate exceptional potential will be provided with structured training at institutions run by the central government.

"This initiative is aimed at the holistic development of youth through sports. We are scouting new talent and will ensure proper nurturing and promotion of deserving players," she noted.

Referring to broader national efforts, Khadse also cited remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha regarding efforts to eliminate Naxalism, stating that improved security conditions open up new opportunities for youth development.

She emphasised that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is working in coordination across ministries to channelise the energy of young people towards constructive avenues like sports.

The inaugural edition of KITG has brought together around 3,800 participants, including athletes, coaches and officials, across 9 sports disciplines, including 7 medal sports and 2 demonstration sports, with 106 gold medals at stake. The event mascot, 'Mor Veer', symbolises courage, pride and the valour of India's more than 700 tribal communities. (ANI)
