A city court has issued a notice to the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), directing that an inquiry into a rape complaint against Nagina Member of Parliament (MP) Chandrashekhar Azad be completed before the next date of hearing, after rejecting Delhi Polices request for more time.

The order was passed by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Neha Mittal at the Rouse Avenue Court. The court listed the matter for further hearing on October 23.

The complainant, a woman, had previously lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, alleging that Azad raped her under the false pretext of marriage, along with charges of cheating.

When the police failed to register a First Information Report (FIR), the complainant approached the Rouse Avenue Court seeking judicial intervention to direct the registration of an FIR against the Nagina lawmaker under relevant sections of the law.

In earlier proceedings, the court had issued a notice to the Delhi Police and asked for a status report. Following an initial grant of time, Delhi Police submitted a status report detailing the progress of the inquiry conducted so far. However, police counsel requested an additional two to three months to conclude the preliminary probe.

Advocate Ashish Dass, appearing on behalf of the complainant, strongly opposed the Delhi Police's plea for more time. Citing judicial precedents, Advocate Dass argued before the bench that offences carrying a penalty of more than seven years of imprisonment require prompt action, noting that the offence of rape carries a minimum sentence of 10 years.

Refusing to grant the extended timeframe sought by the police, ACJM Neha Mittal issued a formal notice directly to the concerned DCP, instructing the senior officer to personally ensure that the inquiry is wrapped up ahead of the scheduled October 23 hearing. (ANI)
