West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya on Tuesday defended the detention of AJUP chief and MLA Humayun Kabir, saying the police had a duty to act against those allegedly engaging in divisive politics and inciting people.
Speaking to the reporters, Bhattacharya said, "...The police decided that elements openly engaging in divisive politics, seeking to drive a wedge between Hindus and Muslims and inciting people to riot, should be arrested, even on election day. That is the police's duty." He expressed confidence that BJP candidates would win both the Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly by-elections."...Rest assured, BJP candidates will win in both these elections, he said. BJP candidate from Rejinagar Sakharav Sarkar said Humayun Kabir should have been arrested earlier, adding that maintaining law and order was the responsibility of the police. "They should have been arrested much earlier; this has been delayed... Law and order is the police's responsibility, Sarkar told ANI. Earlier in the day, Kabir was detained by Rejinagar Police from his party office in Murshidabad.Beldanga SDPO Anandjit Hore said that Kabir was taken into custody for violating the law. In West Bengal, bypolls are being held in the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies. The Nandigram seat fell vacant after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari won from two constituencies in the State Assembly elections earlier this year and chose to retain the other seat. The Rejinagar seat fell vacant following the resignation of Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder Humayun Kabir, who had also secured victory from Nowda. Further, Bhattacharya said that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had ensured a violence-free election in the state, claiming that people were able to vote freely and hailed him as a hero in West Bengal. "Judges are doing their job; while proceedings continue in court, one can stand in North Bengal and say that the people of West Bengal are delighted, having never witnessed an election like this in 70 years. There was no violence or bloodshed before, during, or after the polls. People were able to vote freely and happily. Gyanesh Kumar is the one who achieved this, and he is being hailed as a hero in West Bengal..." West Bengal BJP President said. (ANI)
