Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday paid tribute to freedom fighter Gulab Singh Lodhi on his death anniversary, which is observed as Balidan Diwas.
Addressing a programme in Lucknow, the Chief Minister highlighted Lodhi's contribution to the freedom movement and recalled his role in the struggle for India's independence. Speaking on the occasion, the Uttar Pradesh CM said, "Today, we have gathered here to mark the 91st martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Gulab Singh Lodhi Ji. Born into a humble farming family in Unnao in 1903, he was driven by a deep passion for the nation's freedom. Inspired by this spirit, he actively participated in the freedom movement and ultimately sacrificed his life for the country's independence in Lucknow." Yogi Adityanath further said that the state government has taken steps to preserve the memory of Gulab Singh Lodhi by naming public institutions after him. He said, "To keep the memory of the immortal martyr Gulab Singh Lodhi Ji alive, the Uttar Pradesh government has honoured him by naming a park, a health centre and a police training college in Unnao district after him. The Uttar Pradesh government remains committed to preserving the memory of all such immortal martyrs." Also, in a post on X, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remembered his contribution to the country's freedom struggle. "Great son of Mother India, the immortal martyr Gulab Singh Lodhi Ji sacrificed everything for the freedom of the country and preserved the honor, pride, and glory of Mother Bharat unsullied. Today, on the sacred day of his martyrdom, in Lucknow, floral tributes were offered at his statue to pay homage to him. Salutations to the sacred memories of immortal martyr Gulab Singh Lodhi Ji," CM wrote. Gulab Singh Lodhi was a freedom fighter from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. He laid down his life at the historic Jhandewala Park at Aminabad, Lucknow, in August 1935 while trying to unfurl the tricolour flag, defying a government order that was unacceptable to freedom fighters during the British regime. He was shot dead by a British Officer when he climbed a tree in the park with the flag. India Post issued a commemorative stamp on Gulab Singh Lodhi on 23rd December 2013. (ANI)
