Amit Shah mourns passing of Bibek Debroy

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday expressed profound sorrow over the demise of Bibek Debroy, chairman of Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) and a top economist, describing him as a scholar with unparalleled versatility who made prolific contributions to the fields of economics, history, and philosophy.

Shah expressed the sorrow through a post on his X handle highlighting Debroy's impact on various fields, reflecting on the loss felt by the academic community and the nation.

"Deeply pained by the demise of Bibek Debroy Ji, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the PM. Debroy Ji was a scholar with unparalleled versatility who made prolific contributions to the fields of economics, history, and philosophy. He will always be remembered for his distinguished contributions to Bharat's development journey. My sincerest condolences to the bereaved family, his friends, and admirers in this hour of grief," read Shah's post.

Debroy passed away on Friday morning. He was 69.

Debroy received his education at Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur, Presidency College in Kolkata, the Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge.

His professional experience includes positions at Presidency College in Kolkata, the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi, and serving as the director of a legal reforms project for the Ministry of Finance and UNDP.

An esteemed author and scholar, Debroy is recognised for his significant contributions to economic policy and Sanskrit literature, playing a vital role in shaping India's economic landscape.

His expertise spans various areas, including macroeconomics, public finance, and infrastructure. Debroy has published extensively on issues such as economic reforms, governance, and the Indian railways.

Additionally, Debroy gained acclaim for translating classical Sanskrit texts, including the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, making ancient Indian wisdom accessible to contemporary audiences. (ANI)
