With just weeks left for the Assembly polls in Maharashtra, the Mumbai Police has recovered Rs 20 lakh in cash from a car in the Chembur area and detained multiple individuals for questioning.

The incident took place on Friday.

"During a checkpoint in the Chembur area of Mumbai, police discovered Rs 20 lakh in cash from a car. After the cash was recovered, the Tilak Nagar police in Mumbai also contacted the Income Tax Department," the police statement said.

Following the announcement of election dates in Maharashtra, the model code of conduct has been implemented. Under this code, individuals carrying cash above Rs 50,000 must possess valid documentation, while no paperwork is required for amounts less than that.

With preparations underway for the upcoming Assembly elections, both the ruling Mahayuti alliance and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)--comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Congress--are holding intensive meetings to resolve differences over seat-sharing arrangements. The BJP is part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance alongside the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) and Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with counting for all 288 constituencies set for November 23. In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats, the Shiv Sena secured 56, and the Congress won 44. In 2014, the BJP had a more significant victory, securing 122 seats, with the Shiv Sena winning 63 and the Congress taking 42.

Earlier on Thursday, a crucial meeting was held in Delhi between Home Minister Amit Shah and leaders of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, as well as Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Praful Patel, and Sunil Tatkare, among others, attended the meeting. (ANI)
