IGP Kashmir reviews overall security situation in the region

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Kashmir zone, VK Birdi, chaired a crime and security review meeting at the Police Control Room here on Saturday and also took stock of the preparations put in place for the upcoming counting day of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections.

The counting of votes will take place on October 8.

The meeting was attended by multiple Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), district Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and other senior officers.

The IGP Kashmir took an overall assessment of the security situation of the Kashmir zone, which was followed by the presentations of district SSPs highlighting their efforts in crime prevention and maintenance of law & order in their respective districts.

The discussions revolved around the disposal of general crime, NDPS, UAPA and multiple other cases. Additionally, actions taken under preventive laws and pending inquest proceedings were also discussed.

IGP Kashmir appreciated the efforts of the district chiefs in preventing crime and emphasised the need to improve the quality of investigations.

He also underscored the need to improve the conviction rates by way of establishing a robust follow-up system for securing convictions in narco and terror-related cases.

At the end of th meeting, IGP Kashmir reiterated the commitment of the J&K Police to maintaining safety and security in the region. He urged the officers to work to ensure transparency, accountability and swift resolution of cases to safeguard the rights and safety of citizens.

The Election Commission of India announced on Thursday that an overall voter turnout of 63.88 pc was recorded in the Assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The poll panel reported a voter turnout of 69.69 per cent in the third phase held on October 1. Phase 1 and Phase 2 saw polling percentages of 61.38 per cent and 57.31 per cent, respectively.
