A member of a gang involved in a jewellery robbery in Haridwar was killed in an encounter with Uttarakhand police, according to the authorities.

Two other members of the gang were arrested, and jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh was recovered from them, the police confirmed.

"We received information about five gang members. One was killed in a police encounter, and two have been arrested. Jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh was seized from them," said Uttarakhand Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar to ANI.

The robbery occurred in broad daylight at Shri Balaji Jewellers in the Jwalapur area of Haridwar on September 1.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had directed a swift investigation into the incident, according to a police press release.

"This robbery happened on 1st September in Haridwar, a major incident carried out in broad daylight. The public was outraged, and there was considerable anger over the police response. The Chief Minister took note of the situation, expressed concern, and guided the police accordingly," the DGP said.

According to police, on the night of 15th September at around 10:30 pm, SHO Bahadarabad and a police team were checking suspicious persons and vehicles at BHEL Tiraha, Bahadarabad. When they tried to stop a motorcycle without a number plate carrying two people, both with their faces covered, the pillion rider opened fire on the police.

The suspects abandoned the motorcycle and fled towards the forest, firing at the police team. Despite being ordered to surrender, they continued shooting with the intent to kill, the police said.

In self-defence, the police retaliated, injuring one of the suspects, while the other managed to escape under cover of darkness. A forensic team was called to the scene, and jewellery stolen from Shri Balaji Jewellers on September 1 was found in a bag recovered at the spot.

The injured suspect was declared dead during treatment at the district hospital. He was identified as Satendra Pal, alias Lucky (32), a resident of Muktsar, Punjab. A reward of Rs 1 lakh had been issued for his capture.

Meanwhile, at around 1:45 pm on September 16, Haridwar Jwalapur police, investigating the robbery, arrested two more suspects involved in the crime, the police stated. (ANI)
