Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore said on Saturday that they have apprehended eight people suspected to be involved in the murder of BSP state president K Armstrong.

The Tamil Nadu Chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was hacked to death by a mob of unidentified men near his residence in Perambur, Chennai, on July 5.

"...8 people have been apprehended who we suspect to be involved in this crime. They are being questioned. Armstrong's post-mortem has been conducted," Rathore said.

He also said that the situation in Chennai is normal.

The situation in Chennai is normal. We will leave no stone unturned to unravel this case and investigate all the various angles. All other accused involved in this crime will be caught...," Rathore added.

The top police official ruled out any political angle in the BSP leader's murder case.

"There is no political angle to this...," Rathore said, adding that "BSP Leader Armstrong was attacked outside his residence."

He said that the deceased Armstrong had seven cases against him. "In all the cases, he has been acquitted and the cases are closed."

Rathore said police immediately rushed to the spot after being alerted and sent Armstrong to the hospital in ambulance. "Doctors at the hospital declared him dead upon arrival."

Following the murder, he said ten special teams were formed. "After investigating the spot and accessing CCTV, we arrested 8 suspects in 2 hours.".

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President K Annamalai stated on Saturday that the safety of common citizens is not assured under the DMK rule.

"Yesterday, a party leader was hacked to death. There is no guarantee for a common man's life in this DMK-led state government," Annamalai said at the BJP's state executive committee meeting. (ANI)
