Actor James Norton is set to take on the iconic role of Hamlet in a new London West End production of William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, to be directed by acclaimed German theatre director Thomas Ostermeier, Variety reported.

The production, backed by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions, is scheduled to open in the West End in fall 2027. The theatre venue and performance dates are yet to be announced.

The staging will mark Ostermeier's first time directing a Shakespeare play in English. The Schaubuhne Berlin artistic director previously directed a German-language production of Hamlet that has toured internationally for the past 18 years, Variety reported.

Expressing his excitement about the project, Norton said, "It's a privilege for anyone to take on the role of Hamlet. It's also pretty terrifying. But with Thomas Ostermeier at the helm, I know I could not be in better hands. Both this role and this director have intrigued me and challenged me over the years, and so I cannot wait to start this journey with Thomas and see where it takes us."

Ostermeier also shared his enthusiasm for revisiting the Shakespearean tragedy in English.

"I am pleased to be revisiting 'Hamlet' for the West End with the great stage actor, James Norton. It will be my first time directing Shakespeare in English, and I am excited to explore the original text in order to bring this new production to life. My first 'Hamlet' has been touring the world for 18 years so I am honored to have the opportunity to bring it here to London with James, who in my mind is a perfect Prince of Denmark," he said, Variety reported.

Norton most recently appeared on stage in Ivo Van Hove's adaptation of A Little Life in the West End. He is currently seen on screen as Ormund Hightower in the third season of HBO's House of the Dragon.

The actor will next portray Beatles manager Brian Epstein in Sam Mendes' four-film event The Beatles, alongside Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan and Joseph Quinn. He also has Guy Ritchie's Wife & Dog and George Jacques' Sunny Dancer in the pipeline.

Ostermeier's recent London productions include The Seagull at the Barbican starring Cate Blanchett and Tom Burke, and An Enemy of the People in the West End featuring Matt Smith. He has served as artistic director of Schaubuhne Berlin since 1999 and received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2011, Variety reported.

The upcoming production is being mounted by Wessex Grove, whose recent credits include A Little Life, An Enemy of the People and The Seagull. The company received The Stage Award for Best Producer in 2026. Gavin Kalin Productions' recent West End productions include All My Sons, Vanya and Cabaret. (ANI)
