Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Wednesday welcomed and expressed appreciation for the European Parliament's recognition of Taiwan's resilience and technological capabilities in a report titled "Findings and Recommendations of the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS)," according to a report by Central News Agency (CNA).

As cited by the CNA report, the document, which was released on Tuesday, described Taiwan as a like-minded partner that has started establishing principles and frameworks to protect information integrity, drawing on democratic values, media pluralism and human rights.

The document stated that Taiwan is a "leading partner in terms of situational awareness" and highlighted its efforts to conduct civil defence and resilience exercises in response to what it described as China's growing use of gray-zone warfare tactics.

According to CNA, the report said Taiwan's whole-of-society approach and the experience it has gained through its best practices could assist the European Union in developing preparedness measures and improve the overall effectiveness of the European Democracy Shield.

The European Parliament document also pointed to Taiwan's "leading role" in high-tech development, along with its extensive experience in responding to China's hybrid attacks and foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), as mentioned in the CNA report.

It recommended that relevant security issues be discussed through regular exchanges and called for stronger cooperation with like-minded East Asian partners, including Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. The cooperation would focus on countering FIMI and addressing the potential sabotage of undersea cables.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Taiwan's MOFA thanked the European Parliament for its recognition and support. The ministry said Taiwan would continue strengthening exchanges and cooperation with the European Union and other like-minded partners in order to respond to information manipulation and hybrid threats from authoritarian regimes.

MOFA also stated, as reported by CNA, that Taiwan would continue contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region as well as globally.

The ministry recalled that the EUDS Special Committee travelled to Taiwan in July 2025 as part of its first visit to Asia. The delegation was headed by committee chair Nathalie Loiseau and held meetings with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung.

According to the CNA report, the discussions during the delegation's visit covered issues including societal resilience and efforts to counter foreign information manipulation and interference.

The European Parliament's recognition and Taiwan's response come as discussions continue over strengthening democratic resilience, tackling information manipulation and responding to hybrid threats through closer cooperation among like-minded partners. (ANI)
