Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday inaugurated a 200 tonne-per-day (TPD) biogas plant at Goyla Dairy under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, in the presence of Delhi Minister Ashish Sood.

She said the project was approved in 2018 but was inaugurated only in 2026, alleging that the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government failed to take it forward. Explaining the delay, Gupta alleged that the political situation at the time had affected the projects progress, as the BJP was in power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Because at that time, the BJP was in power in the MCD. They thought that if they did it, another achievement would be credited to the Municipal Corporations name. They (AAP) didnt care that there wasnt a single biogas plant in Delhi, she said.

Gupta said the government had started three biogas plants, each with a capacity of 200 metric tonnes, in the last one-and-a-half years. She added that the government planned to establish 6 more plants to process the cow dung generated in the national capital and produce green energy.

Today, we have started three biogas plants in a year and a half and three biogas plants with a capacity of 200 metric tons each. If three biogas plants could be set up in just a year and a half, she said.

We arent going to stop at just 3 biogas plants. Weve planned 6 more. Well build one in Ghazipur, and 5 others, so that if Delhi generates 1500 tons of cow dung every day, we should have biogas plants with a capacity of more than 1500 tons daily. So that we can also produce green energy, she added.

The Chief Minister also cited the biogas plant at Nangli, which she said was built in September 2025. She said around 55,000 tonnes of cow dung had been processed there in a year to produce gas and fertiliser.

We built a biogas plant back in Nanglee in September 2025 and today, within just one year, around 55,000 tons of cow dung there was used to make gas and fertiliser. Just think, 55,000 tons of cow dung was processed in a single year; otherwise, what would have happened? All that cow dung would have ended up in the Yamuna, making it even dirtier and more polluted, Gupta said.

Gupta further said the government was working to improve drainage systems in Delhis dairy colonies alongside the construction of biogas plants. She said she had asked officials to identify the requirements, following which the Mayor secured Rs 50 crore for drainage work in the colonies.

The Commissioner told me that all the Dairy Colonies in Delhi need to have their drainage systems fixed. Biogas plants will be built, but the second priority is fixing the drainage. I asked him to tell me what was needed. Then the Mayor came and got 50 crore rupees from me for all the Dairy Colonies. Today, new drains are being built in every Dairy Colony, she said.

Delhi Minister Ashish Sood said the inauguration marked the revival of a project for which funds had been allocated in 2018. He accused the previous government of prioritising political interests and publicity over public welfare projects.

Today, we have inaugurated a project for which funds were allocated back in 2018. The process has now been set in motion. This goes to show that the previous government did absolutely nothing. It tried to further its own political interests through grand advertisements and by cultivating an ecosystem of propaganda. It focused on stalling and derailing public welfare projects. Now, the politics of making excuses is coming to an end. We are gradually resolving all such pending issues, Sood said.

He added that the biogas plant was important for efforts to clean and restore the Yamuna. (ANI)
