Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday congratulated Indian-origin South African jurist and human rights pioneer Navanethem Navi Pillay on winning the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, describing the honour as truly well-deserved and praising her lifelong dedication to human rights, international justice and the rule of law.

In a post on X, Tharoor wrote, Proud congratulations to Navanethem "Navi" Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Her lifelong dedication to human rights, international justice, and strengthening the rule of law across the globe continues to inspire all of us who, like her, served the @un. A truly well-deserved honour!

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Pillay as the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

In its official announcement, the committee said Pillay had demonstrated exceptional courage and integrity in advancing a more comprehensive global legal order and had played a significant role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.

Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, South Africa, during the apartheid era, Pillay became a legal pioneer who challenged structural discrimination and exclusion.

Throughout her career, she served as a judge on South Africa's High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The Nobel Committee highlighted her contribution to landmark legal developments, particularly the recognition that rape and sexual violence could constitute crimes against humanity and acts of genocide.

Emphasising the importance of international legal frameworks in resolving conflicts peacefully, the committee stated, Peace requires justice.

It added that Pillay's commitment to justice and human dignity remained a source of hope and inspiration for those seeking a more peaceful world.

The award comes amid growing concerns over international conflicts and pressure on global legal institutions, with the committee reiterating the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for serious crimes. (ANI)
