Delhi govt launches PM Surya Ghar portal; Power Minister Ashish Sood says free electricity scheme expanded

Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood, who was present at the launch event, described the initiative as a "revolutionary step" for Delhi, asserting that it marks the end of years of "misinformation and deceptive politics" regarding power subsidies.

Addressing the media, Sood said that the launch of the portal proves that the Delhi government has not only fulfilled its commitments regarding free electricity but has also expanded the benefits for citizens.

"Before the elections, misleading propaganda was spread that if a BJP government came to power, the free electricity scheme in Delhi would be stopped. We have not only continued the free electricity scheme, but have also provided Delhiites with an opportunity to earn an income by installing solar panels on their rooftops," Sood said.

"Through this initiative, residents can receive free electricity and generate an estimated monthly income between 293 and 2,400, a benefit that will continue for 25 years," the Power Minister added.

Sood further stated that the technology-driven initiative advances Prime Minister Narendra Modis vision of clean energy transition and economic empowerment, delivering directly on the ground.

Terming the scheme a fitting response to political rivals who questioned the party's intent on power subsidies, the minister reiterated that the government remains committed to providing affordable, sustainable energy and economic relief to every household in Delhi.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship central government scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024. Its primary goal is to provide free electricity (up to 300 units per month) to 1 crore (10 million) households across India by promoting the installation of rooftop solar systems. (ANI)
