Delhi Police has filed a 973-page chargesheet in the rape, murder and robbery case of a young UPSC aspirant in Amar Colony, with investigators relying on CCTV footage, DNA profiling, fingerprint examination and other forensic evidence to establish the involvement of the accused.
According to Delhi Police, the incident took place on April 22, at Kailash Hills in East of Kailash under the jurisdiction of Amar Colony police station. The victim, the daughter of an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer and a UPSC aspirant, was allegedly sexually assaulted, murdered and robbed inside her residence. Police said expert teams from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Lodhi Colony, and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Rohini, examined the crime scene immediately after the incident. Investigators also analysed footage from more than 100 CCTV cameras to trace the accused's movements before and after the crime. The accused, identified as 23-year-old Rahul Kumar Meena, was identified through CCTV footage and arrested on the same day after sustained efforts by multiple police teams. Police said the entire robbed property was recovered at his instance. According to the investigation, several teams were constituted under the supervision of senior officers of the South-East District. The teams carried out extensive field enquiries, questioning neighbours, security guards, domestic workers, labourers, drivers, sweepers, auto-rickshaw drivers and others present in the area. Police teams were also sent to Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and different parts of Delhi to verify leads and collect evidence. Investigators recreated the crime scene in the presence of CFSL experts after the accused's arrest. Sequential photography and videography of the reconstruction, including the accused's entry, movement and exit from the house, were conducted. CCTV footage and reconstruction videos were also examined for gait pattern analysis. Police said the accused underwent a Behavioural Analysis Interview and Layered Voice Analysis (LVA) by CFSL experts. Chance fingerprints and palm impressions lifted from the crime scene were found to match those of the accused. Forensic examination of exhibits by the Physics, Chemistry and Biology divisions of CFSL also yielded positive results, police said, adding that DNA profiling conclusively matched the accused's DNA with biological evidence collected during the investigation. Delhi Police said statements under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were recorded during the investigation, and the prosecution has cited 82 witnesses in the case. Upon completion of the investigation and other legal formalities, the South-East District Police filed the 973-page chargesheet before the competent court on July 16. The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing on July 18. (ANI)
