The death toll has climbed to three after two more persons were declared dead following a four-story under-construction building collapsed in the Rohini area of the national capital, officials said.
A total of three people were pulled from the debris by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), out of which one person was injured, while two were declared dead. According to reports, before the DFS arrived at the scene, locals had already retrieved one person from the rubble and taken him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Meanwhile, Station Officer Naveen Thakran noted that a total of four persons were buried under the debris, who were rescued and moved to the B.R. Ambedkar Hospital, where 3 of them were declared brought dead while one person sustained injuries. The deceased have been identified as 20-year-old Noorul Huda, a resident of Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh; 51-year-old Ram Dua, a resident of Sector-16, Rohini; and 42-year-old Ram, also a local resident of Rohini Sector-16. The injured survivor, identified as 34-year-old Saddam from Dwarka in North West Delhi, remains hospitalised. The rescue operation has concluded, although a DFS team remains deployed at the site as a precautionary measure. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon involving a ground-plus-four-story structure spanning roughly 52 square meters, originally a pair of two 26-meter DDA flats. Earlier, Rohini Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Shashank Jaiswal said that after receiving the information, he reached the spot, followed by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), the District Magistrate (DM), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, and other officers to launch a joint rescue operation. An FIR has also been registered under the relevant sections. "We received information around 4:30 PM today that a building had collapsed. Upon receiving the news, the SHO, the rest of the staff, and I immediately rushed to the site. The SDM, the DM, NDRF personnel, and other officers also arrived shortly thereafter. We launched a joint rescue operation. When the power supply was cut off, we arranged for lighting. We are working in close coordination and providing all possible assistance. The rescue operation is still underway. There is one confirmed fatality; the person was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. We managed to save one individual's life. According to reports, some people might still be inside the building. All teams, including the NDRF, are deployed, and we are striving to save more lives. It was under construction. We have registered an FIR under the relevant section, and the investigation is ongoing," he said. Delhi Fire Service Divisional Officer, AK Jaiswal, said that five fire tenders were deployed for the rescue operation along with the Assistant Divisional Officer. He also said that JCBs were used to clear the debris and search for trapped individuals. "The call was received at 4:19 PM; five fire tenders were initially dispatched along with an Assistant Divisional Officer. We learned that there were two buildings, and a third floor was under construction when the structure suddenly collapsed. Meanwhile, the Delhi Fire Service team successfully conducted a rescue operation and pulled out one survivor. Since there is no firefighting work required, our focus is on rescue operations. We are assisting in clearing the debris with the help of JCBs and searching to see if anyone is trapped underneath," he said. (ANI)
