Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Saturday downplayed the significance of the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) performance in the state municipal elections, asserting that local body poll results should not be seen as an indicator for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Speaking to ANI, Warring said the BJP had also performed poorly in urban areas despite being considered dominant in cities.

"In cities, it is said that the BJP dominates there, but in yesterday's municipal elections, they performed very poorly," Warring said.

On the Aam Aadmi Party's performance in the municipal elections, he further said the results were not entirely favourable for the AAP either, pointing out, "This isn't exactly a happy moment for the AAP either. Last time, AAP didn't even contest these elections, yet they formed the government in the Assembly elections."

The Punjab Congress chief also claimed, "The Congress Party has performed very well this time compared to all previous statistics. There's no criterion that winning municipal elections means you'll also win the upcoming Assembly elections," he said.

Earlier, Warring on Friday had alleged that 750 documents of party candidates were rejected in the local body polls in the state.

"The Municipal corporation elections have taken place in Patiala, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar. Our performance in them was praiseworthy. 750 documents were rejected in Punjab. The AAP has won 595 seats. They contested unopposed in 80 seats. Meaning 595 plus 80. Those 80 are the seats where papers were rejected, and candidates won unopposed without a contest. They rejected the documents of our candidates," Warring said.

Aam Aadmi Party swept the Nagar Panchayat polls, winning 105 of 246 wards, while results for Municipal Councils showed AAP leading with 630 wards out of 1,272 where results have been declared, according to election reports for the General Elections to Municipalities-2026 held on May 26. (ANI)
