Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Saturday condemned the attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee and appealed to people not to take "law and order" into their own hands.

Banerjee was attacked during his visit to Sonarpur to meet the post-poll violence victims' families.

"I condemn this incident. I appeal to the public to not take law and order in their own hands... The public of Bengal is furious against the TMC and Abhishek Banerjee... We need to improve Bengal... We need to make the politics of Bengal violence free... I appeal to the public to maintain peace and trust law and order," Majumdar told ANI.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters after the incident, Banerjee strongly criticised the state administration and security arrangements, alleging a deliberate lapse.

"If the two security officials posted with me are reporting the incident to their superiors, yet no force is arriving, then it's clear that the higher authorities want this entire incident to continue, and there's no effort from the state government to stop it. This clearly shows that the way one death happened here, similarly, more 2-4 deaths should happen; only then will they get some peace. Let them do whatever they want. We have everything recorded. We will go to court. I will go upto the Supreme Court to fight this case," he said.

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the party of turning "killers" following an alleged attack on TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister expressed her outrage, stating, "RULERS BECAME KILLERS- shame on you BJP."

TMC leader Derek O' Brien slammed the Centre and asked why Abhishek Banerjee's security "was withdrawn".

"What is happening now in Bengal. The Lok Sabha Leader of the second largest Opposition party @AITCofficial went to visit the family of a person murdered by BJP in post poll violence. @abhishekaitc was lynched and attacked by a few BJP supporters. Life at risk. Where are the police ? Why was security withdrawn on the day of counting ? Let the Home Minister answer," he said in a post on X. (ANI)
