Congress MP Rajeev Shukla on Saturday said India should maintain a neutral foreign policy and avoid getting entangled in global conflicts.

Speaking on Rubio's visit amid the ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, the Congress MP said the purpose behind the sudden trip was unclear.

"Even we cannot understand the sudden visit of Rubio. I feel he has perhaps come seeking India's help amid the ongoing Gulf War and strategy," Shukla said.

Calling for a reassessment of India's diplomatic approach, he further said, "I think we can still correct our foreign policy. We should adopt a neutral foreign policy and have good relations with all countries. We will only harm ourselves by getting entangled in such things."

Marco Rubio, accompanied by his wife Jeanette D Rubio, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel, arrived in New Delhi on Saturday after concluding his visit to Kolkata earlier in the day.

During his visit to the national capital, Rubio is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and deliver remarks at the dedication ceremony of the US Embassy Support Annex Building.

Earlier in the day, Rubio visited Kolkata, where he paid tribute to Mother Teresa at the Missionaries of Charity.

In a post on X, Rubio said, "Mother Teresa left a tremendous legacy of compassion and service. I was honored to visit the Missionaries of Charity today to pay homage to her legacy and to see the living example of the Catholic faith in action."

Meanwhile, in a separate matter reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributing appointment letters to newly recruited candidates, Shukla claimed unemployment remained a major issue in the country.

"I believe that there are about 22 crore unemployed youth in this country. If 51,000 people are given appointment letters, what would it do? This is insufficient," the Congress MP said. (ANI)
