Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Friday visited the Arun Jaitley Stadium to interact with players from the Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians ahead of their IPL 2026 match.

Accompanied by team officials, the LG met with Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel and the rest of the squad to extend his best wishes for their upcoming home game, while also sharing a moment with Mumbai Indians players Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.

Sharing the moment on X, LG wrote, "Visited the Arun Jaitley Stadium today and interacted with players ahead of tomorrow's much-anticipated IPL encounter between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. Met Axar Patel, Captain of Delhi Capitals, along with the team, to extend my best wishes for a sportsmanlike and spirited performance as they play their second match of the season at their home ground. Also interacted with Rohit Sharma and Surya Kumar Yadav from the Mumbai Indians squad."

"It is always encouraging to see such world-class talent and experience representing the very best of Indian cricket. Beyond the competition, sports remain a powerful medium to foster unity and a shared sense of national pride. May the match be a celebration of true sportsmanship and a thrilling experience for all fans in the National Capital," LG added.

Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to clash with Delhi Capitals (DC) in the second group-stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday and the MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene believes that every home team in the IPL is a challenge.

Speaking to the media on the eve of the match, the former Sri Lankan batter said the DC are also playing their first match in Delhi, and the conditions will be similar for both sides.

"It should be a good match. They are a very good team. In IPL, every home team is a challenge. First game for them here as well, so that's probably a slight advantage for us," said Jayawardene during the press conference on Friday.

Mumbai Indians won their first match of the season after chasing down a formidable target of 221 to defeat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The last time MI won the first match of the IPL season was 14 years ago, back in the IPL 2012 season.MI registered a dominant six-wicket victory over KKR. Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma helped the Mumbai Indians secure their biggest run-chase in IPL history. (ANI)
