As the Centre plans to bring amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandana Act, Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Friday lauded the BJP government's decision to convene a special session for said legislation, asserting that his party, the LJP (Ram Vilas), has consistently treated the topic with the utmost seriousness.

"Women have been demanding this, and our party has consistently supported it--even since the time of our late leader Ram Vilas Paswan Ji. We treated the Women's Reservation Bill with seriousness then, and now, with the government calling a special session, I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and hope the opposition will also support it," said Paswan.

Meanwhile, the BJP government plans to reconvene the parliament budget session again in the third week of April, said sources.

The government is planning to bring an amendment bill to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 from 543 seats. The idea is to have at least 273 seats reserved for women.

According to sources, the key agenda may include amendments to the 2023 Nari Shakti Vandan Act and the introduction of the Delimitation Commission Bill.

The sources said that the Centre has planned to take the 2011 census as the basis for delimitation and seat redistribution.

Currently, the Lok Sabha has 543 seats. With a proposed 50 per cent increase, the number of seats will rise to 816, with 273 (about a third) reserved for women.

The bill was passed by Parliament in 2023. The base for delimitation had originally been set at the 2011 census. The Delimitation Act will be amended accordingly. The Government is currently building consensus as this legislation will need 2/3rd majority to pass this legislation, making it crucial to secure support from opposition parties. (ANI)
