Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 78th death anniversary.

"Heartfelt tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his death anniversary," Eknath Shinde wrote on X.

Earlier today, Congress paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and said his ideals of justice and peace will continue to inspire the nation.

Congress wrote, "On the sacred death anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi ji, the supreme priest of Truth and Non-violence, millions of salutations. Bapu's ideals will forever continue to inspire us to follow the path of justice and peace."

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, aka Mahatma Gandhi, a leading figure in India's freedom movement, succumbed to bullets on January 30, 2026. He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse while he was on his way to daily prayers.

January 30 is marked as Martyr's Day. On the occasion of his 78th death anniversary, the Centre will hold an all-religious prayer (Sarva-Dharma-Prarthana) and Martyr's Day Ceremony, in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister and Rajghat Samadhi Committee Chairman Manohar Lal, at the Rajghat in the national capital.

The Sarva-Dharma-Prarthana is held annually on his death anniversary, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay floral tributes to Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi is remembered for his principles of Satyagraha and non-violent resistance. Leading the movement against the Britishers, he held the Dandi March in 1930 against the Salt Law. Under his leadership, in 1942, people across India came together for the Quit India Movement or the August Kranti.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting shared a video clip noting Gandhi's contributions to the freedom struggle and wrote on X, "Remembering Mahatma Gandhi, a revered leader and freedom fighter who shaped India's destiny through truth and non-violence." (ANI)
