Assam Police arrest 10 "misguided youths" attempting to form new extremist group

Assam's Karbi Anglong Police station has arrested 10 "misguided youths" who were attempting to form a self-styled extremist group. During the operation, police recovered a range of arms and ammunition, including several pistols, guns, a grenade, and other explosives.

According to officials, the youths were trying to establish the DHD (U) extremist group and had in their possession 1 AK-47 rifle, three pistols, one SB gun, one grenade, and various rounds of ammunition.

"In consonance with CM Himanta Biswa's vision for peace & progress, Karbi Anglong Police launched a series of intel-based operations coupled with simultaneous outreach. Result: 10 misguided youth, attempting to form a new extremist group, styled as DHD(U) surrendered with arms - 1 AK, 3 Pistols, 1 SB Gun, 1 Grenade & Ammunition," read a post by Assam Police.

Earlier today, Assam's Sonitpur police also conducted a drive against illicit liquor and seized more than 15 types of alcohol.

According to a post by Sonitpur police, the seized items include- 17 Kingfisher Beer (650 ml), 15 Kingfisher Cane Beer (500 ml), 20 No 1 Whisky (180 ml), 22 Iconic White Whisky (180 ml), 10 IB Whisky (180 ml), 21 Old Monk Rum (180 ml), 16 No 1 Rum (180 ml), 5 Old Monk Rum (375 ml), 50 KD 50 Whisky (375 ml), 3 No 1 Whisky (375 ml), and 11 AC Black Whisky (180 ml).

Meanwhile, Director General of Police Hardi Singh said on June 19 that the crime rate (per lakh population) in Assam has dropped significantly to 127.6 since last year, down from 139.3 in 2024 and 385.8 in 2019.

In a post on X after chairing the monthly crime review meeting at the police headquarters, DGP Singh said, "Crime Rate per lakh population has dropped to 127.6, down from 385.8 in 2019 and 139.3 in 2024. Under the guidance of CM Himanta Biswa, we remain committed to justice delivery and a safe & secure Assam."

The DGP also highlighted the increase in the state's conviction rate, which has risen to 26.09 per cent, up from 5.5 per cent in 2020 and 22.95 per cent in 2024. (ANI)
