An 18-month-old boy, Krishna Omprakash Gupta, tragically fell into an open drain near Maurya Hall on Gaondevi Road in Bhandup (West) around 6:30 pm on Sunday.

The Bombay Municipal Corporation confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.

Officials report that the boy slipped through a small opening in a partially covered drain section. The family had encroached upon the area for home waste disposal.

The child was immediately taken to MT Agrawal Hospital, where he was declared "brought dead" at 6:35 pm.

BMC quoting Dr Sneha Khedekar, Senior Medical Officer, added, "One drowned boy was reported on 10.11.2024 at 1830 hrs, declared brought dead by Dr Sneha Yadav, M.O. at 1835 hrs."

According to the BMC's statement, "The major nalla drain on Gaondevi Road is mostly open, but in some places, residents have covered up the drain as per their convenience.

"The victim's family also encroached and closed part of the drain, leaving a small opening for their home waste pipe outlet, through which the child fell. Ward & SWD staff inspected the site," the statement added.

Following the incident, the BMC's ward and stormwater drainage teams inspected the area. (ANI)
