The Congress on Sunday announced to field former MLA Manoj Rawat from Kedarnath for the assembly bypoll to the constituency of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly next month.

According to an AICC release, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Manoj Rawat as the Congress candidate for the ensuing bye-election

The bypoll in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath is scheduled for November 20, with the vote count to be held on November 23.

The bypolls to 48 Assembly constituencies are spread over 15 states - Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

The largest number of bypolls will be held in Uttar Pradesh and seats going to the polls are Meerapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Karhal, Phulpur, Katehari, Majhawan, and Sishamau.

The bypolls in Uttar Pradesh are crucial for BJP as it suffered a setback in Lok Sabha polls. BJP could win only 33 seats compared to the 62 it won in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The BJP would be keen to regain its winning momentum in Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier on October 15, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced by-polls for 48 Assembly constituencies and two Parliamentary seats, scheduled to occur in two phases alongside the Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections.

Voting for the first phase, covering 47 Assembly constituencies and the Wayanad parliamentary seat in Kerala will take place on November 13. The second phase will occur on November 20 for the Kedarnath Assembly constituency in Uttarakhand and the Nanded parliamentary seat in Maharashtra. The counting of votes will take place on November 23. (ANI)
