The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) decision imposing a penalty of Rs 1,000 crore on the Punjab government as environmental compensation for failing to manage solid and liquid waste.

A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and also comprising justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra asked the Centre and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to file the response on the appeal filed by the Punjab government.

The Punjab Government has challenged the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order imposing a penalty of Rs 1,000 crore on the Punjab government for its failure to manage solid and liquid waste in the state.

The order, which was delivered recently, has asked the state government to deposit a fine of Rs 10,261,908,000 with the CPCB as environment compensation.

The NGT in its order, noted that repeated orders were passed in the hope and trust that Punjab Government will take serious, substantial and urgent steps to comply with provisions of Environmental Laws.

The NGT noted that the state has miserably failed in complying with its order.

The NGT said that stringent, punitive and preventive action is required against the Punjab government for the non-compliance of environmental laws while imposing a fine against the state. (ANI)
