Sion accident: Accused doctor gets bail in fatal accident of elderly woman

Dr Rajesh Dhere, who was arrested in connection with the fatal accident of an elderly woman in Mumbai, got bail on Sunday.

Dr Dhere is the head of the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology department of Sion Hospital and Dean of the BKC COVID Centre.

The elderly woman was fatally hit by a speeding car at Sion Hospital in central Mumbai on May 24.

According to the officials, the car involved in the accident was of Dr Rajesh Dhere from the Sion hospital.

Anil Jadhav, the lawyer of the accused, said that the offence under which the case is registered against Dr Dhere is a 'bailable offence'.

"The offence, under which the case is registered, 304 A, is a bailable offence... He has been granted bail of Rs 20,000," he told reporters.

The deceased has been identified as Zubaida Sheikh. She was suffering from diabetes and was admitted to the Sion Hospital for the last two weeks. She was discharged from the hospital just a week ago and started visiting for follow-up.

The police registered a case under sections 304 A, 388, 279, 203, 177 and other sections of the Indian Penal Code against the doctor, based on the complainant of the deceased woman's son, Shahnawaz Khan.

A senior police officer said that the CCTV footage of the hospital premises is being scrutinized.

According to police sources, in the preliminary investigation, it seems that the woman has met with an accident but the police are investigating the matter from other angles as well. (ANI)
