The Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) jointly apprehended a group of drug peddlers at Agartala Railway Station on Thursday late at night.

The operation resulted in the seizure of 22 kilograms of dried cannabis. The contraband was intended for transport from Agartala to Patna, Bihar.

The suspects were identified as Purushotam Kumar (23) and Charan Kumar (20), both hailing from Khagaria district in Bihar. Purushotam Kumar, son of Sri Gorelal Yadav, resides in the village of Bhuria, under the jurisdiction of Jamalpur Police Station, with a postal code of 851203.

Charan Kumar, son of Jageshwar Yadav, is from Fudki Chawk, in the Gogari police station area of Khagaria, identified by the same postal code of 851203.

Upon interrogation, the duo revealed their plan to smuggle the cannabis via train from Agartala to Patna. Acting on a tip-off, the GRP and RPF teams conducted a coordinated raid, successfully intercepting the individuals before they could board the train.

The Agartala GRP police station registered a case and initiated an investigation. Both suspects are scheduled to be presented before the court on Friday, with the police likely to seek remand for further interrogation.

This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts of the Agartala Railway Police to curb illegal drug trade while ensuring the safety and security of railway passengers and stopping illegal drug peddling.

OC Tapas Das of the Agartala Government Railway Police Station reiterated the commitment to maintaining stringent surveillance and conducting regular operations to prevent the smuggling of narcotics through the railway network. (ANI)
