Kanye "Ye" West's scheduled concerts in Tampa will go ahead as planned after efforts to block the performances failed, despite a petition led by US Senator Rick Scott over the rapper's past antisemitic remarks.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, West is set to perform at Raymond James Stadium on Friday and Sunday, with the Tampa Sports Authority confirming that the shows will proceed.

The decision comes after Scott launched a Change.org petition earlier this month, urging the publicly funded venue to cancel the concerts, arguing that taxpayer-funded facilities should not host the rapper because of his previous controversial statements.

The petition, which gathered more than 11,000 signatures, was backed by Senator Ashley Moody, Holocaust survivor Toni Rinde, Jewish community leaders and several state and national officials.

Scott said Florida's large Jewish community should not be expected to support performances by an artist who has made repeated antisemitic remarks in recent years.

In response, the Tampa Sports Authority, as per The Hollywood Reporter, said it operates the venue in accordance with "free speech principles."

While stating that it does not endorse offensive or divisive comments made by artists, the authority maintained that it could not cancel the concerts based on West's past statements.

"We recognise the concerns and viewpoints being expressed about the upcoming events at Raymond James Stadium," the statement read. "As a public agency, we follow the principles of free speech in operating our venue, although we do not condone remarks or actions from any artists that are offensive and divisive."

According to local reports, legal experts who reviewed the agreement between West and the stadium said the contract includes provisions that prevent cancellation over previous public remarks. The concerts could only be called off under exceptional circumstances, such as a major national security threat or a significant public health emergency.

Although the petition did not stop the concerts, protests are planned outside the venue. Mobile billboard trucks are expected to circle Raymond James Stadium before Friday's show, directing people to Scott's petition and raising awareness about the rapper's past comments, THR said.

As per the publication, the Florida Holocaust Museum has also announced that it will offer free admission from Friday through Sunday while West performs in Tampa.

West has faced widespread criticism since 2022 over a series of antisemitic and inflammatory statements made on social media and elsewhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, earlier this year, he published a full-page newspaper advertisement expressing support for Jewish people and attributing some of his past behaviour to a brain injury. The statement drew mixed reactions.

The controversy has also affected West's international touring plans. His scheduled appearances at the U.K.'s Wireless Festival were scrapped after visa issues, while a planned concert in Poland was also cancelled, said The Hollywood Reporter. (ANI)
