Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], April 21: In a major leap for respiratory medicine, senior specialist Dr. Sheetu Singh has developed a pioneering diagnostic tool to identify Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP)--a severe lung condition that often leads to fatal fibrosis.

The research, which boasts an impressive accuracy rate of over 90%, has gained international acclaim and has been published in Thorax, one of the world's most prestigious journals for respiratory research.

The Crisis: A Silent Killer in South Asia

Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is a group of disorders that cause scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs. Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis is the leading cause of ILD. The disease is particularly rampant in South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.

Tragically, due to the difficulty in pinpointing the exact environmental triggers, 50% to 70% of patients succumb to the disease within three to five years of diagnosis.

The Innovation: What is the HP-SAQE Tool?

The newly developed tool, named HP-SAQE (South Asian Questionnaire for Environmental Exposure), is a scientific scoring system specifically designed for the unique environmental exposures of the South Asian population.

How it Works:

Unlike traditional methods, this tool measures a patient's environmental exposure and assigns a numerical value.

-

The Threshold: A score of 9 or higher indicates a high probability of HP, allowing doctors to distinguish it from other forms of ILD.

-

The Criteria: The questionnaire analyzes contact with common regional triggers, such as:

-

Pigeons and other birds.

-

Agricultural dust and farming activities.

-

Mold from air coolers or damp environments.

-

Wood dust, flour dust, and industrial fumes.

-

The Analysis: It evaluates the duration, frequency, and location of the exposure, and whether these factors correlate with the onset of symptoms.

Filling a Global Gap

The need for such a tool was highlighted in the 2020 international guidelines by the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

"Reaching the correct cause in complex lung diseases is often the biggest challenge," says Dr. Sheetu Singh. "In India, nearly 40% of patients suffering from lung fibrosis have HP. Because its symptoms mimic other lung diseases, diagnosis is often delayed. HP-SAQE simplifies this complexity."

Dr. Singh's research involved clinical data from patients across India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, ensuring the tool's relevance to the region's specific lifestyle and climate.

Symptoms and Prevention: What You Need to Know

HP often presents with symptoms that can be mistaken for a chronic cold or asthma, including:

-

Persistent shortness of breath and a cough lasting months.

-

Gradual weight loss and constant fatigue.

-

Chest tightness and swelling in the feet.Preventive Measures Recommended by Experts:

-

Avoid Birds: Maintain distance from pigeons; prevent them from nesting on balconies or windows.

-

Maintenance: Regularly clean air coolers and AC filters to prevent mold and dust buildup.

-

Home Hygiene: Ensure proper ventilation and sunlight to prevent dampness and seepage.

This breakthrough not only marks a proud moment for the Indian medical community but offers a literal lifeline to millions of patients across South Asia who previously faced a bleak prognosis due to misdiagnosis.
