Expressing serious reservations over the manner in which incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan was examined by a medical team, party leader Latif Khosa has formally approached Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, Dawn reported on Monday.

The letter highlights deep concerns regarding the former premier's check-up, which reportedly took place in "secrecy" at the Adiala jail on Sunday.

The medical evaluation followed Supreme Court instructions to assess the leader's condition before February 16, after the bench was informed that the former prime minister had only "15pc vision left in his right eye."

While a team of doctors visited the facility on February 15, the PTI has contested the process, citing the exclusion of the leader's relatives and trusted physicians.

In his correspondence, Khosa, acting as legal counsel in the Toshakhana case, asserted that conducting the examination in "secrecy, without notice to the family or independent doctors, has given rise to serious apprehensions."

According to the report by Dawn, the letter maintains that the "continued exclusion of the petitioner's family and personal medical practitioners from information concerning his health has created unavoidable doubts."

The PTI leader further warned that "such secrecy not only undermines confidence in the medical process but is also causing unrest and distress among his family members, friends and supporters."

Highlighting the leader's age of 73, Khosa stated that "his advancing age and declining health are matters of grave concern not only for his family but for the people of Pakistan at large."

Khosa pointed out that despite being a widely supported political figure, the PTI founder remains "deprived of basic human necessities during a period when his medical condition demands care and transparency."

He noted that for several months, reports regarding the "deterioration of the petitioner's eyesight and overall health" have triggered nationwide anxiety.

Referring to a report submitted to the apex court on February 11 by Barrister Salman Safdar, Khosa noted that the findings were "alarming."

As detailed in the report by Dawn, Khosa claimed that the document "confirms that the petitioner has been left with only approximately 15pc vision in his right eye."

He alleged that despite "repeated complaints of blurred and hazardous vision, no timely or adequate medical intervention was undertaken by the jail authorities."

Khosa strongly refuted claims that the family had voluntarily skipped the Sunday check-up, calling such assertions "wholly incorrect and unrealistic."

He maintained that at no point were the "family members, personal physicians or counsel" informed and instead, a "panel of handpicked doctors" was utilised.

The letter also noted that the former prime minister has "repeatedly sought access to his personal doctors, namely Faisal Sultan and Asim Yousaf," for an independent review of his eye condition.

Khosa further noted that while meetings were previously permitted under jail regulations, it has now been several months since "no meeting has been allowed," effectively denying the family access to the incarcerated leader, Dawn reported. (ANI)
