West Bengal Minister Sankar Ghosh on Tuesday addressed the timeline for tabling of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, stating that the announcement regarding its introduction in the Assembly will be made within "months or days."

Speaking to ANI, Ghosh said that discussions regarding the matter have already taken place on the floor of the Assembly.

"See, already we have discussion on this particular matter at the floor of assembly and our CM has already stated that within a month or days it will be announced by the government of West Bengal when the bill will be introduced," said Ghosh.

Ghosh's remarks came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 13 said the UCC will be implemented across all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA before 2029, while asserting that Indias national security posture has undergone a fundamental transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modis leadership.

Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Shah said, We introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in several states. I am confident that we will implement the UCC in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA before 2029...Operations such as the surgical strikes, air strikes, and Operation Sindoor have established a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, while security has been prioritised across various sectors.

The UCC aims to establish a common set of personal laws for all citizens, irrespective of religion, in matters including marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. The issue has been a key agenda of the BJP, with the party advocating for its implementation as part of its broader legal and social reforms.

The bill has already been introduced and passed in three states: Gujarat in February 2024, Uttarakhand in March 2026 and Assam in May 2026. (ANI)
