BJP MP K Laxman on Tuesday hit back at AIMIM chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi over his remarks on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), accusing him of communalising the issue and saying the BJP-led governments measure is aimed at addressing discrimination, not targeting Muslims.

Responding to Owaisis claim that the BJP government wants to introduce the UCC specifically to target Muslims, Laxman said the UCC is not directed against any particular community but is a measure against discrimination.

He questioned Owaisis attempt to link the UCC with the Muslim community and said the concept advocated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Modi government is based on equal citizenship, equal rights and equal respect.

"Asaduddin Owaisi claimed that the BJP government wants to introduce the UCC specifically to target Muslims. However, the BJP and the Modi government operate on the principle of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas'. The UCC is not directed against Muslims; it is a measure against discrimination. Owaisi is attempting to politicise the UCC by giving it a communal spin. Why is Owaisi communalising the concept of equal citizenship, equal rights, and equal respect advocated by Home Minister Amit Shah and the Modi government? It is purely for political gain, he told reporters.

The BJP stands up for the rights of every citizen in this country. Regardless of the political controversy Owaisi tries to manufacture, the people will certainly hold him accountable," he added.

His remarks come as Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday launched a blistering attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that the push for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is not intended to bring equality, but is designed solely to target India's 18 crore Muslims.

Owaisi emphasised that the foundation of the country rests on diversity, adding that the government's own Law Commission had previously red-flagged the necessity of a uniform code.

"First, you need to understand that the BJP is not pursuing the UCC for the sake of equality. They have introduced the UCC in their states and at the government level solely to target India's 18 crore Muslims; in doing so, the BJP and Amit Shah are acting in contravention of Articles 25 (Freedom of Religion), 14 (Right to Equality), 26, and 29 of the Indian Constitution. So, one must first grasp that this move by the BJP is not about equality; it is purely to target Muslims," Owaisi told reporters.(ANI)
