Indian Railways' One Station One Product (OSOP) scheme has emerged as a significant marketplace for local artisans, weavers, craftspeople and small-scale producers.

As per official information, over 2,300 OSOP outlets are currently operational at more than 2,000 railway stations nationwide to date, connecting local producers with millions of passengers and benefiting over 1.54 lakh individuals.

Through these outlets, the information mentions that sales of approximately Rs 162.39 crore have been recorded so far, while nearly 1,50,000 direct beneficiaries have received opportunities under the scheme.

Launched on March 25, 2022, the initiative leverages the extensive reach of Indian Railways to transform stations into accessible marketplaces for regional products. Following a successful 15-day pilot across 19 stations, OSOP was scaled up through a structured rollout, with stalls allotted on a rotational basis at nominal fees to ensure wider participation. Under the scheme, products including handicrafts, handloom items, textiles, toys, leather products, traditional goods, jewellery and local food products are offered for sale.

From Madhubani Paintings and Banarasi Crafts to Kanchipuram Silk products, items closely associated with the cultural and traditional identity of different regions across the country are also reaching passengers through OSOP.

These include Madhubani paintings and Bhagalpuri silk from Bihar, Gamosa and Mekhela Chador from Assam, Kota Doria and Sanganeri prints from Rajasthan, Channapatna toys from Karnataka, Kanchipuram silk from Tamil Nadu, Kolhapuri footwear from Maharashtra and Moradabad brassware from Uttar Pradesh.

According to state-wise figures, West Bengal has the highest number of OSOP units at 378, followed by Maharashtra with 205, Tamil Nadu with 199 and Uttar Pradesh with 196 units.

"To facilitate easier participation by small producers, the registration fee for 15 days has been kept at only Rs 500 to Rs 1,000, depending on the category of the station. Cashless payment options such as UPI, BHIM, POS machines and digital wallets are also being encouraged," said the Railways, adding "the expansion of the scheme is continuing steadily."

It is notable that the growing network of OSOP outlets illustrates how public infrastructure can support inclusive growth. By integrating local products into everyday transit spaces, the initiative strengthens grassroots entrepreneurship while preserving traditional skills.

It is also pertinent to note that OSOP transforms routine journeys into meaningful encounters.

Travellers engage with stories behind the products they purchase, while artisans gain recognition and economic stability. In this exchange, railway stations evolve into spaces where culture, commerce and community converge. As OSOP continues to expand, it stands as a compelling example of how local talent can be amplified through national platforms, ensuring that India's rich heritage travels far beyond its place of origin.
