The Delhi government has notified a scheme to provide compensation of up to Rs 7.5 lakh to families of prisoners who die due to unnatural causes in jails in the national capital, the Chief Minister's Office said on Sunday.
According to a post by the Delhi Chief Minister's Office on X, the scheme provides financial assistance to the families of deceased prisoners based on the circumstances surrounding their deaths. https://x.com/CMODelhi/status/2083875963746865349?s=20 "Compensation of up to 7.5 lakh will now be provided to the families of deceased prisoners in cases of unnatural deaths in Delhi's jails. Under the scheme notified by the Delhi government, 7.5 lakh will be given as assistance in cases of death due to conflicts among prisoners or alleged beatings by jail staff, and 5 lakh in cases of negligence or suicide. Deaths due to natural causes or illness will not be covered under this scheme. This scheme will further strengthen transparency, accountability, human dignity, and the rule of law in the jail administration," Delhi CMO wrote on X. Meanwhile, in another decision aimed at strengthening Delhi's disaster management system, the Delhi government has decided to enhance the remuneration of staff working under the Delhi State Disaster Management Authority (DSDMA), including Project Officers (POs), District Project Officers (DPOs), and Project Coordinators (PCs). Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the decision will provide these personnel with a remuneration increase of up to 100 per cent. She described it as a long-overdue measure to deliver justice to officials who have served as the backbone of Delhi's disaster management system since 2009, despite not receiving a single revision in their remuneration over the past 16 years. The Chief Minister said these positions were created in 2009 with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Since then, the monthly remuneration of Project Officers, District Project Officers, and Project Coordinators had remained unchanged for 16 years. During this period, inflation rose, disaster management challenges became more complex, responsibilities continued to expand, and the scope of their work grew significantly. (ANI)
