Cockroach Janta Party on Saturday alleged that Delhi Police had been illegally detaining young people in and around the Jantar Mantar area over the past few days and demanded an immediate halt to such action.
The party's Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das alleged that several youths had been detained by the police, calling the action "illegal" and "unconstitutional." "For the past two-three days, the Delhi Police have been illegally detaining several young people and young-looking people from in and around Delhi, especially in and around the Jantar Mantar area. Such detention is absolutely illegal and unconstitutional," Das alleged. He further claimed that lawyers associated with the organisation and others had been assisting those detained. Das alleged that three students carrying 300 food packets were detained at Nizamuddin Police Station a few days ago and were later released after lawyers intervened, but claimed the food packets were not returned. Das said the party had submitted a statement to the Delhi Police Commissioner demanding an end to the alleged detentions and the immediate release of those detained. "We have requested him, or rather demanded, that such illegal detention of people and creation of an atmosphere of fear and the kind of siege that is being laid around Jantar Mantar be immediately stopped. The police should cease from taking such action... and people who have been detained be released immediately," he alleged. He further alleged that lawyers had also been threatened by the police and warned that if the alleged actions did not stop, protesters at Jantar Mantar would march to the Delhi Police Headquarters and stage a peaceful dharna. "If the Delhi Police and the Government of India think that this is a war zone, let them declare it. In any case, we will stage a peaceful dharna... if they don't stop this immediately," Das said. Meanwhile, CJP has called for a nationwide candle march on July 26 at 6 pm, urging people to gather at their respective district collector offices in solidarity with those it describes as victims of police brutality. They appealed to student unions and other organisations to coordinate permissions and logistics, read out students' demands during the gathering, and participate in a silent candle march with one candle per person. Earlier, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Saturday said the group wants a clear "yes or no" from the Central government on whether it will seek the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan ahead of a scheduled meeting with the government later in the day.
