The Patient Summary Report shared with activist Sonam Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali Angmo yesterday clearly mentioned the patient's potassium levels, sources said on Sunday and noted that the multidisciplinary team of medical experts has been consistently counselling both the patient and the family to facilitate timely medical intervention and adherence to the recommended treatment protocol.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk was brought to the Safdarjang Hospital yesterday by Delhi Police from Jantar Mantar, where he was on a hunger strike in support of students' protest against "paper leaks". Gitanjali Angmo said earlier in a post on X that she had "lost faith" in Safdarjung Hospital. "The Patient Summary Report shared with Gitanjali Angmo, wife of Sonam Wangchuk, yesterday clearly mentioned the patient's potassium levels," a source said. Sources said that in a social media post this morning, Angmo alleged that the hospital neither shared the potassium values in writing nor included them in the Health Bulletin. They said such developments during an ongoing course of treatment are not conducive to the smooth management of the patient's medical care. Safdarjung Hospital earlier said that 59-year-old Wangchuk was admitted to VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital at 7:40 am on July 18 after being brought by the Delhi Police. It said that at the time of admission, he was conscious with a stable pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation, though mucosal dryness and decreased skin turgor were observed. "Blood gas analysis revealed compensated acidosis with decreased serum potassium of 2.9 mEq/l and a blood sugar level of 78 mg/dl. Repeat serum electrolyte tests confirmed the serum potassium level at 2.92 mEq/l, while urinary ketones increased from 1+ at the time of admission to 3+ by 1:00 pm," the hospital said. Angmo stated in a post on X that public health bulletin issued today did not mention his potassium level. "I have lost faith in Safdarjung Government Hospital. The hospital told us Sonam Wangchuk's potassium had dropped to 2.9, describing it as alarming and life-threatening. Yet, in its public health bulletin, it conveniently omitted the actual number, referring only to 'decreasing potassium levels'. An independent laboratory test reported 3.5, well within the normal range," Angmo said in her post on X. "Despite repeated requests, the hospital has refused to discharge him or allow us to shift him to a private hospital of our choice. With around 30 police personnel stationed on our floor and well over 100 across the hospital, our movement is severely restricted. It is not medical care. It is illegal detention. If anything happens to Sonam, the hospital authorities and the government must bear full responsibility. I have therefore moved the High Court and sought an urgent hearing today, praying for permission to shift Sonam before his health deteriorates further. No family should have to fight the system simply to choose where their loved one receives medical care," she said. In the writ petition filed in Delhi High Court under Article 226 of the Constitution, Angmo has sought a declaration that Wangchuk's continued stay at the government hospital amounts to "illegal and unconstitutional confinement" under the guise of medical treatment. The plea seeks directions for his immediate discharge and transfer, unrestricted access for his family, legal counsel, and independent doctors, as well as the handover of his complete medical records for an independent medical examination.
