The Bengaluru Police have registered an FIR against an unidentified individual for allegedly creating a fake social media profile of a senior IPS officer and soliciting money from the public under the guise of funding "public work," officials said on Tuesday.
The complaint was lodged by M Narayana, who is currently serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Electronic City Division. According to the FIR registered at the Hebbagodi Police Station, the fraudster created a spoofed Facebook profile using the DCP's name and images to target residents across Bengaluru. In his complaint, DCP Narayana stated that the unidentified person was contacting individuals through the fake profile and requesting financial contributions, claiming the funds were needed for various public initiatives. The investigation has revealed specific financial trail details used by the accused, including a bank account under the name 'Om Singh' at an Axis Bank branch in Didwana, a specific UPI ID (gpay11258340719@okbizaxis) and contact numbers (9181519848 / 9950732897). The fraudulent activity reportedly took place between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM on May 14, 2026. Based on the DCP's complaint, the Hebbagodi Police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2008, which deal with identity theft and cheating by impersonation using computer resources. Additionally, charges have been framed under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The FIR notes that the accused is an "Unknown Adult Male" from Bengaluru City.
