The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has mapped out a week of stark environmental contrasts across the Indian subcontinent.

The national weather narrative has split cleanly down the middle, presenting a dual-threat scenario: a relentless, soaking monsoon siege in the East and Northeast, running parallel to a punishing, humid heatwave gripping the southeastern coast.

Speaking to ANI, IMD Scientist Akhil stated that the primary theatre of weather activity has shifted dramatically. A massive convective system is locking itself over the eastern and northeastern states, triggering high-alert warnings for the next seven days.

The situation is escalating rapidly, with IMD scientists singling out Meghalaya and parts of Bengal for immediate "extremely heavy rainfall" warnings.

"We anticipate that the primary focus of rainfall and convective activity during the week will be Eastern and Northeastern India, where warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall have been issued for various days. Heavy rainfall warnings are in place for Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh over the next 7 days; an 'extremely heavy rainfall' warning has been issued for Meghalaya and parts of Bengal for today," Akhil said.

Additionally, several states in Eastern India, including Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and the Gangetic Bengal region, are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

Regarding the Western and Himalayan regions, the weather office has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Uttarakhand starting from July 15. By the end of the week, heavy precipitation is also likely to hit Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

In contrast, parts of South and Coastal India are expected to face 'hot and humid' weather conditions.

"As for South India and the coastal areas of Eastern India, such as coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Odisha, hot and humid weather conditions are expected over the next 3 to 4 days. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next three days," the scientist added.

The IMD's forecast suggests a significant regional divide in weather patterns, with the northern and eastern belts preparing for intense monsoon spells while the southeastern coast grapples with heat and humidity. (ANI)
