Four people, including three bus staff members and one passenger were killed while around 25 others were injured after a Volvo bus rammed into a trailer on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district in the early hours of Monday, officials said.

According to police, the accident took place near milestone 112 under the jurisdiction of Raya police station at around 3:35 am.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Suresh Chandra Rawat said the bus, carrying around 65 passengers, collided with a trailer moving in the third lane from behind due to overspeeding.

"A road accident occurred on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura district. A trailer was moving in the third lane. A Volvo bus carrying approximately 65 passengers collided from behind with the trailer due to speeding. The police received information at 3:35 am. A green corridor was established from the accident site to the hospital. The injured were immediately rushed to the hospital. Four people have died and 19 others are undergoing treatment. The entire administrative team is present at the scene," Rawat told ANI.

Providing an update, district officials said the deceased have been identified as three members of the bus staff and one passenger, while the number of injured has risen to around 25.

Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said the preliminary investigation revealed that the bus's co-driver, and not the main driver, was behind the wheel at the time of the accident.

"The co-driver was driving the bus at a high speed. He lost control, following which the bus rammed into the trailer ahead. A detailed investigation into the incident is being carried out," the SSP said.

Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash and SSP Shlok Kumar visited the district hospital to meet the injured passengers and review the treatment arrangements.

The District Magistrate directed hospital authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured.

The administration also said that passengers who have been discharged or are fit to travel will be provided transport to their respective destinations by the district administration. (ANI)
