BJP leader V Muraleedharan on Monday described the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections as a crucial and historic battle for the BJP, saying it could mark a milestone in Kerala politics.

He expressed confidence that voters would move away from both the alliances that have alternated in power in the state and extend their support to the BJP.

Speaking to ANI, Muraleedharan said, "This election is going to be a very decisive battle for the BJP, and I'm sure that this will become a milestone in the history of Kerala politics. People will discard both the alliances that have been ruling the state of Kerala alternately. I'm sure that the people of Kerala will support the BJP in the coming election. Definitely, it's a three-way fight."

"I am not at all discounting the presence of Congress. Congress has represented this constituency many times, including the stalwarts of Congress. So Congress has its roots in this constituency. So it is definitely a three-way fight," he said.

The BJP released its first list of 47 candidates, a day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that the State will vote on April 9 in a single phase. Apart from Chandrasekhar, other prominent names in the BJP list are George Kurian, V Muraleedharan, K Surendran and Navya Haridas.

Union Minister George Kurian has been named a candidate from Kanjirappally. V Muraleedharan will contest from Kazhakoottam, while Navya Haridas will contest from Kozhikode North. Former Kerala BJP president K Surendran will contest from the Manjeshwar seat.

Counting of votes is scheduled to take place on May 4.

The Model Code of Conduct is now in place till the voting takes place in the 140-member State Assembly, which is also known as the Kerala Niyamasabha.

The tenure of the current assembly is scheduled to end on May 23. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, with scrutiny of nominations on March 24 and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures on March 26. (ANI)
