"Very inhumane...": Nobel laureate's house in-charge on ECI's age discrepancy notice to Amartya Sen

The notice states that the age difference between Sen and his mother is less than 15 years, which is unusual. The in charge of Sen's house maintenance, Geeti Kantha Majumdar, claimed that the ECI changed Sen's mother's birth year from 1914 to 1918, leading to the notice.

"They (Election Commission) have issued a notice stating that there is a 15-year age difference between Amartya Sen and his mother, but Amartya Sen's mother was born in 1914. When Amartya Sen was born, there was a 19-year and 6-month age difference between him and his mother... but they changed 1914 to 1918 and sent him the notice... this is very inhumane..." he stated.

The notice stated that Sen is required to be present at her residence, in the presence of the Bolpur Election Registration Officer, on January 16 at 12:00 pm.

"Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work is going on in your assembly constituency. Your duly signed calculation form has been accepted, and the following points have been observed: As per your declaration, the age difference between you and your father/mother is less than 15 years, which is generally not expected, and hence this matter has been ascertained through the witness documents of the last SSI and its voter list," the notice said.

"No match or possibly incorrect match with the voter list prepared at the time of previous SIR with a view to stay, we request you to be present in front of the undersigned (Taniya Roy, Election Registration Officer, Bolpur) on 16-JAN-2026 at 12:00 PM at your residence," the notice added.

Meanwhile, the ECI clarified that the notice was issued due to a "logical discrepancy" in the enumeration form and that Sen, being over 85 years old, will have the hearing at his residence on January 16.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has criticised the move, calling it a "shameful farce" and alleging that the ECI is targeting prominent personalities from Bengal. (ANI)
